“Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life…”

Psalm 23:6

In my prayer time this morning, Psalm 23:6 came to mind. I asked God, “Does that include today?”

I think He snickered a little. “OF COURSE it includes today. Whatever would make you think that anything could discourage or restrain my goodness and mercy?”

“Well, nothing.” I answered.

So why don’t we live like it? Why do we walk around afraid we won’t have what we need when we need it? Why do we hide from God in shame as if His mercy hasn’t chased us around all day long? Why do we over work, over think, and over exaggerate- pretending like we have to make everything happen on our own?

This verse doesn’t just say that His goodness and mercy are available. It says they FOLLOW you. They chase you. They hunt you down. You can’t outrun it. You can’t hide. You can’t escape His goodness. You can’t intimidate His mercy. They’re bigger than you.

You don’t have to worry about overwhelming the promises of God.

“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” Numbers 23:19

God doesn’t make promises He can’t keep. When He said His goodness and mercy will follow you every day, it meant no rain checks. It meant no days off. No vacations. No recess. No sabatical. There’s never a day or time that God’s promises rest. They are always at work. Always chasing, following, and providing for you.

Because when He speaks- there’s action. In the beginning of time, God said, “Let there be light.” And light has been every day since. Just as you see in the sun rise in the morning, you can count on God’s goodness and mercy waking up with you.

Walk around today with the realization that goodness and mercy are right on your tail. If you stumble, they’ll catch you.

What do goodness and mercy do?

“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and long-suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” Romans 2:4

Goodness leads us back to Christ. Not only us, but also the world around us that doesn’t know Him.

When we access and utilize the goodness of God in our lives, it points the non-believer to Jesus.

God’s goodness reassures us that we are loved, accepted, and forgiven in Christ Jesus. When we aren’t aware of the relentless kindness of our Heavenly Father, we lack the courage to grab hold of all the promises and plans of God.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. For his mercy endures forever.” Psalm 136:1

Mercy endures.

The dictionary definition of endure is to- suffer patiently. That tells me that His mercy is with me in my pain. His mercy lasts through my rebellion. His mercy survives until the end. His mercy is enough for me.

It’s patient with me. Mercy is for the hard times. Mercy walks with you, upholds you, and sustains you until you’ve made it out of the battle. Mercy is in it for the long haul.

When we recognize God’s endless mercy in our lives, we become more durable and tenacious to the storms of life.

So when God says two of His most resilient gifts follow you every day- you can walk on confidently knowing you don’t have to conquer the day alone.

Yesterday, today, tomorrow, and the rest of 2020, you will have God’s goodness and mercy right there with you. You’re going to make it. You aren’t alone. Move forward with confidence because you know what is following you.
