“Out of all the things we celebrate, how much more worthy of acknowledgment is loving each other.”

I feel like I’m the minority when I say I love valentines day. When the mushy gushy holiday is mentioned I see the people around me roll their eyes. Some, because they’re single and they feel like the day is a national reminder of that. Others, because they think it’s just a waste of money.
I’ve been married now for three years and I hear all the time, “You still celebrate Valentine’s Day?!” As if it’s only for the newly dating, but here’s the thing- I’ve loved Valentines Day long before I ever started dating my husband.
I have very fond memories as a little girl waking up on February 14th to find a cute little stuffed animal sitting on top of brand new pink and red fuzzy pj’s and a box of candy with a card from my dad. He always got my mom and me a gift. I loved it. His cards would say he loved me and was proud of me.
It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized not everyone’s father did this for them. In fact, none of my friends got anything from their parents on Valentine’s Day. The more I thought about it, the more I realized what my dad was doing was extraordinary. He was celebrating the fact that he loved me. He was valuing his family.
Now that I’m married it’s more important than ever to celebrate love. We as a whole have this natural tendency to take the people closest to us for granted. We take for granted everything our mother’s do for us. We take for granted that our spouses love and protect and provide for us. We take for granted that our friends encourage and support us. We take for granted that our grandparents are alive and with us. We take for granted that our children are happy and healthy.
We take so much for granted all the time and Valentines is a set day to acknowledge and celebrate the love we have for one another. So if flowers and chocolates aren’t your thing, (although they’re most definitely mine *cough* hint for my hubby *cough*), then celebrate in whatever way means the most to you.

Out of all the things we celebrate, how much more worthy of acknowledgment is loving each other.

And no, you don’t have to be married or dating to participate in a day of appreciation. Have a girl’s night with your best friend. Take your kids to a movie. Write a thank you letter to your parents. Show the important people in your life that you love them. That you cherish them. That you celebrate them.
My favorite verse in the Bible is 1 Peter 4:8(NIV), “Above all, love each deeply because love covers a multitude of sins.” If the Bible took time to say above all, then it’s probably because loving each other is a big deal. What a wonderful opportunity Valentine’s Day is to love each other deeply.
I encourage you to purposefully celebrate the people in your life that are important to you this year.
Be Blessed!

I believe that if we can’t show love to those closest to us; there is no way we can love others that God puts in our path. Love God…Love People…It’s That Simple.
